A delightful Medieval town with a charming riverside port and impressive ramparts and towering viaduct on its Southern tip, as Grahame would say “What’s not to like?”
First French Phoon of the tour (it had to be done!) outside the city gate coming uphill from the port….
The view from the ramparts is impressive across the city towards the spire of the Basilique St Savueur where reputedly the heart of one of the most ferocious anti-English 14th Century Knights is interned, Bertrand du Guesclin….
The towering Keep, subsequently the Chateau de Dinan is alongside the main gateway into Dinan….
The old quarter is dotted with half timbered housing, rather quaint is the steep cobbled street, Rue du Petit Fort which cuts through a gorge and down to the Vieux Pont (Old Port Bridge)….
At one time there were over a 1000 of these Medieval timbered porch extensions, today there are only 17….
Todays Fun Fact: Despite Bertrand du Guesclins best endeavours Dinan today has one of the largest English expat communities in this region (Oh the irony!)
